History Frames | 1.3

What communities do we build? Why do our networks expand and contract? How has production and distribution shaped our societies? These questions relate to frames that can help us change how we see history by focusing our attention on different details.

📄 Activity: Defining the Frames

[[☃ image 1]]

##Purpose

Use images and what you know about the frames community, production and distribution, and networks to create definitions for the course frames.

[[☃ explanation 22]]

##Process

###Step 1: Create a chart

Copy the chart below and label it. For each frame, brainstorm and write down the words or ideas that come to mind.

  1. Use the points from your chart to write your own definition of the community frame.

Start with: “The community frame is about…”

###Step 5: Comparison

  1. Compare the definitions you wrote with the ones provided below. How are they similar? How are they different? What could you add to your own definition to make it stronger?

##Reflect

How do you think using these frames will make it easier to learn about history?

📄 Activity: Frame Overview

Before you can use the frames to organize, analyze, and understand historical events, you first need a clear idea of what each frame means.

[[☃ image 1]]

##Purpose

This activity will help you define each historical frame, see examples of how they are used to study events, and analyze the positive and negative effects of expansion within that frame. After watching each video, you’ll have a clearer understanding of how the frames can help you make sense of history.

[[☃ explanation 1]]

##Part 1: Watch

  1. Create a graphic organizer to capture your notes as you watch three videos about the frames.

How has this frame expanded over time?
Identify a positive effect of expansion.
Identify a negative effect of expansion.
How does this frame help me understand history?
  1. Watch the three videos and fill in the table as you go.

##Part 2: Practice

  1. **Each frame introduction video begins with a quote. Match each quote below to the frame it best represents. **

  1. In the questions below, you’ll see one positive and one negative claim about each historical frame. Match each claim with the piece of evidence that best supports it.

##Reflect

Which claim do you think makes the stronger case—positive or negative? Pick one for each frame and back it up with your reasoning!

📄 Activity: Draw the Frames

One way to really understand an idea is to turn it into a picture.

[[☃ image 1]]

##Purpose

In this activity, you’ll create a visual representation of the three historical frames—community, production and distribution, and networks.

[[☃ explanation 1]]

##Part 1: Community

Choose either your own community or a community you’ve learned about in social studies.

Your drawing should include:

  • People
  • At least one place where people live
  • At least one place where people work
  • At least one place where people spend free time

[[☃ explanation 7]]

##Part 2: Production and distribution

  • Add where the community produces or grows (food, goods, resources)
  • Add how these items are shared, traded, or used within the community

[[☃ explanation 8]]

##Part 3: Networks

  • Add lines and arrows to show connections between people inside the community. Also show connections to other communities (trade, travel, communication).

[[☃ explanation 9]]

Be creative! Your visuals don’t need to be perfect—just try to show your ideas visually.

##Reflect

After finishing your visual, write one sentence for each frame—community, production and distribution, and networks—explaining how you represented it.
