Khan Academy’s NGSS unit guides are designed to help you use our resources as a supplement alongside your existing science curriculum.
Created by educators, for educators, these guides combine practical teaching strategies with content support. Whether you’re new to the course or have been teaching it for years, you’ll find tools and ideas to support your planning, build confidence, and enhance your classroom experience.
##What’s included in each unit guide
Each unit guide is organized into sections to help you quickly find what you need for planning, instruction, and student support.
###Section 1: Overview
This section provides a big-picture overview of the unit, including lesson summaries, hands-on activity descriptions, key standards, and essential questions to drive learning.
###Section 2: Lesson notes
This section offers detailed information for each lesson, including available resources (videos, articles, and exercises), standards alignment, learning objectives, and classroom implementation tips.
Learning objectives describe what students should be able to demonstrate by the end of the lesson. Key terms are bolded for easy reference, and teaching tips suggest ways to introduce content, engage students, and support progress.
Hands-on activity lessons include links to downloadable student and teacher guides. These activities are designed as engaging, phenomenon-based explorations using readily available materials.
###Section 3: Related phenomena
This section highlights relevant phenomena you can incorporate during the unit to deepen student learning. Each phenomenon includes a guiding question to spark student interest, background information that explains the science behind the phenomenon, key student understandings, and tips for classroom implementation.
###Section 4: Common student misconceptions
This section identifies common misconceptions related to the unit’s concepts. It also outlines the critical concepts students need to understand and offers strategies for uncovering and addressing misconceptions in the classroom.
###Section 5: Unit resources
This section compiles links to helpful student resources, such as videos, simulations, articles, and note taking or graphing templates. It also includes classroom implementation resources to support teachers in lesson planning. Any resources mentioned elsewhere in the guide are collected here for easy access.
###Section 6: NGSS standards reference guide
The final section includes the full text of all NGSS standards addressed in the unit—PEs, DCIs, SEPs, and CCCs—along with guidance on how crosscutting concepts are applied.
