Irrational numbers
βΆ Classifying numbers
There are many categories we can use to classify numbers. Some of those categories are rational numbers, irrational numbers, integers, and whole numbers. Rational numbers are represented as a fraction of two integers, while irrational numbers cannot be represented as a fraction of two integers. Integers are positive and negative numbers that donβt involve fractions or decimals. Whole numbers are a subset of integers β they are non-negative integers.
βΆ Worked example: classifying numbers
How do repeating decimals fit into the number sets? We'll explore if a number like 3.4028 repeating is a real number, a rational number, or both. We'll use multiplication and subtraction, plus a bit of algebra, to convince ourselves of whether or not there is a fraction representation of the number.
