The solar system
Explore the structure of the solar system, which formed from a nebula and includes the Sun, eight planets, asteroids, and comets. Compare the rocky inner planets to the outer gas giants. Identify key features such as the asteroid belt and the distant Oort cloud filled with comets.
โถ The solar system part 1
The Sun is the star at the center of our solar system. There are eight major planets in orbit around the Sun: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Each has its own interesting features, including moons and rings.
โถ The solar system part 2
There are many other objects in orbit around the Sun than the eight major planets. There are comets, asteroids, meteoroids, and dwarf planets such as Pluto and Eris. There's the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, the Kuiper belt past Nepyine, and the Oort cloud, a spherical shell of rocks and ice that surrounds the entire solar system.
